The Generation Project Launch Tour Hits the West Coast!

Friday, 9 October 2009 16:18 by Eli Savit

The Generation Project's summer/fall launch tour--sponsored and hosted by Rugby Ralph Lauren--made a stop on the West Coast on September 30th at the Rugby store in San Francisco.  The event was particularly meaningful to all of us here at The Generation Project, as we were pleased to announce our intention to expand our operations to the Bay Area next year!

As had been the case at all of our previous stops, we were greeted by enthusiastic guests who enjoyed an open bar, hor d'ouvres, raffled shopping sprees from Ralph Lauren and--of course--the opportunity to design personally meaningful opportunities for students growing up in low-income areas.  Donors designed a wide array of creative gifts based around their personal passions, including:

  • -$25 for calligraphy pens
  • -$40 for a model R/C car with working gears
  • -$50 for a copy of Disney's Earth and supplies to make dioramas of the habitats in that film
  • -$75 for a gift entitled "Artsy Fartsy" that aimed to expose students to the arts
  • -$100 for a digital camera for a budding photographer
In San Francisco, we had the privilege of being introduced by pop singer Marie Digby--one of our first donors--who spoke about her experience sponsoring a songwriting contest.  Check out our highlight of Marie's gift here.

Check back soon for a recap and highlights from our entire Rugby-sponsored launch tour, as well as details regarding an upcoming launch event in Southeast Michigan.  More...

(Long Overdue): The Generation Project Launch Tour Hits Boston!

Tuesday, 6 October 2009 10:36 by Eli Savit

Editor's Note: Apologies for this long-overdue post recapping our September 23rd event!  We had some problems getting photographs uploaded from this event and wanted to make sure we adequately highlighted our glamorous and generous Boston guests.  Our San Francisco recap is coming soon.

The Generation Project's summer/fall launch tour--sponsored and hosted by Rugby Ralph Lauren--resumed on September 23rd with a stop at the Rugby store in Boston.  A young, enthusiastic and fashionable crowd enjoyed an open bar, hor d'ouvres, raffled shopping sprees from Ralph Lauren and--of course--the opportunity to design personally meaningful opportunities for students growing up in low-income areas.  Donors designed a wide array of creative gifts based around their personal passions, including:

  • -$25 for a rotating globe (Editor's note: Out of the 200+ gifts we've had pledged, this is the first globe--and I can't believe nobody had given one yet!  This is possibly the cheapest way of getting a kid into geography... I can remember being wildly entertained for hours on end simply by sitting beside a globe and spinning it).
  • -$30+ (and a promise of business tutorials) to fund a young artist and help them sell their paintings.  The money will be repaid and reinvested in other young artists.
  • -$50 for a class bake sale
  • -$2000+ for a recurring essay contest with cash prizes that will motivate students to improve their writing.

The Generation Project Launch Tour Hits Chicago!

Sunday, 26 July 2009 17:03 by Eli Savit

The Generation Project's summer launch tour--sponsored and hosted by Rugby Ralph Lauren--made a stop in the Windy City Wednesday night at the Rugby store in Lincoln Park.   Over 75 guests enjoyed an open bar, catering from Chicago landmark (and Obama favoriteMinnie's, shopping incentives and, of course, the opportunity to become a philanthropist by designing gifts for kids in low-income areas.  As always, the Rugby store employees's energy and enthusiasm helped make the event a tremendous success.  A special shout-out goes out to Rugby associate (and theatre aficionado) Zach, who was so inspired by our mission that he created a $75 gift for low-income Chicago students to attend a play in the city.    Some other gift highlights from the Chicago event included:

  • -$30+ to purchase a Magic Johnson jersey for a high school varsity basketball player who writes an essay on "why passing is more important than shooting."  (Full disclosure: this was from my old college point guard, Kyle Konwinski, who takes that maxim to heart)
  • -$40 to help students "win at trivial pursuit for life" (through the purchase of Uncle John's Bathroom Reader books)
  • -$60 to help students recognize their creative capacities by attending a show at Chicago's famous Second City Main Stage
  • -Two gifts of $100 for students to start a vegetable garden
  • -$200 for running shoes for a high school track team
  • -$500 to start a forensics team in Detroit, Michigan
  • -A $1000 college scholarship for a high school sophomore who has demonstrated leadership and academic excellence.  This gift is meant to simultaneously expose students to the college admissions process early, and to give the winner motivation to finish high school on a strong note.

In addition, our Chicago event was a high-water mark in terms of fundraising for The Generation Project--thanks in part to a generous $2,500 gift from the Chicago-based law firm Baker & McKenzie. Now, after three successful events in DC, New York, and Chicago, our launch tour takes a short break before continuing in September with events at the Rugby stores in Boston and San Francisco.   As always, your minimum $25 donation directly funds a gift you design, and gets you an open bar, free food, and a chance to win one of three shopping sprees from Rugby Ralph Lauren!
