The Generation Project Named A Chase Advisory Board Pick!

Monday, 25 January 2010 16:15 by Eli Savit

Well, folks, we did it!  We just received word that the Chase Community Giving advisory board  has selected The Generation Project to receive $37,000 in discretionary funding.  This money--on top of the $25,000 we won in Round One of the competition--will go a tremendously long way towards expanding educational opportunities for K-12 students growing up in poverty.

It's been a long competition.  But in the end, your voice counted.  You let the world know that that where a child goes to school should not determine the range of educational opportunities available to her.  You stood up for a new model of giving, in which anybody can be a philanthropist.  You voiced your confidence that educational inequality can be chipped away by individual citizens, one gift, project, and opportunity at a time.

Winning this grant is a great honor.  But of course, our work is just beginning.  Over the coming weeks, we'll be expanding to new schools across the United States.  We'll be rolling out new features on the website that will empower even more individual donors, educators, and students.  And, of course, we'll continue to implement your unique visions and help you share your passions in low-income schools and classrooms across the country.

No grant announcement involving The Generation Project would be complete without our newest tradition--an awesome picture of Chicago first graders enjoying a donor's gift of play money. (The gift helped teach these students about real-world uses for addition and subtraction).  They're excited about money.  We're excited about money.  And we're even more excited because we know this money is going to make a tremendous difference for vibrant, bright, and hilarious kids like these.

Voting Closed in Chase Competition. Thank You!

Saturday, 23 January 2010 12:05 by Eli Savit

Voting in Round Two of the Chase Community Giving challenge on Facebook drew to a close last night, and the winners were announced early this morning. Unfortunately, The Generation Project was not among the top six vote-getters, but our hats go off to the winners--whose worthy charitable missions range from building schools in Uganda, to suicide prevention in America, to ending domestic violence in Turkey.  Kudos to these charities on their great work and their amazing campaigns.

We owe a tremendous  "thank you" to everybody who voted for us throughout this competition.  In Round One, your support allowed us to outlast over 500,000 other charities to win a $25,000 grant and make it to the final round.  In Round Two, nearly 17,500 of you voted for us, because you believe that poverty should not restrict educational opportunity, and because you believe that anybody can be a philanthropist.

An extra big "thank you" goes out to the students on college campuses across the country who worked tirelessly to campaign for The Generation Project.  Our team during the competition included 194 committed students on over 100 campuses across America, who crafted and carried out grassroots campaign strategies.  It was so inspiring to see these young leaders--the future philanthropists of the world--work so hard for our cause because of their belief that poverty should not restrict educational opportunity.

We're proud of how our team conducted our Chase campaign.  We spent a total of $50 on the campaign--to rent a microphone for the filming of our promotional video.  (The video itself was done pro bono, by the incredible Maicol Chavez).  The success of our campaign was based solely around the power of our idea, and the power of our grassroots campaigns.

So, a big thank you goes out to all of our supporters.  From our team at Spelman and Morehouse Colleges, who put together this amazing video in support of our cause:

...to the Hope College mascot, who voted for us at a station set up by our Hope team..

...to MC Hammer, who dropped a tweet in support of The Generation Project during the final days of voting...

...we thank you.

What's next?  Well, we didn't win $1 million--but our work goes on. We're going to use our $25,000 Chase grant to start serving low-income schools in two new regions--New Orleans and the Bay Area.   Very soon, we'll also be launching our upgraded website, loaded with features that should allow for regular, meaningful interaction between donors and teachers.  We're going to continue to build on the momentum this contest has created, and grow our campus initiative nationwide.  And, of course, we'll continue to implement your vision for the future, in the form of opportunities you design for children growing up in poverty.

Again, on behalf of The Generation Project team, thank you.

The Generation Project Named A Round 1 Winner in Chase Community Giving Challenge

Wednesday, 16 December 2009 19:08 by Eli Savit

Exciting news! Today, Chase Bank announced the 100 winners in Round 1 of its Community Giving Challenge on Facebook.  Among the finalists: your favorite donor-driven educational charity, The Generation Project!

For winning Round 1, The Generation Project will receive a $25,000 grant from Chase.  Words can't adequately express how we feel right now.  Thankfully, though, we have this picture of a donor's gift being implemented at Chicago's Loomis Elementary School that will suffice.  We, like them, are very excited by money:

We owe a tremendous debt to all of our amazing supporters for all the work they did on our behalf over the past few weeks.  We beat over 500,000 charities to win Round 1, so we are particularly honored by this grant.   Special thanks to our amazing college interns at Michigan, Northwestern, and NYU, as well as to everybody who voted for us on Facebook, passed along the information to their friends, and posted about The Generation Project on their profile.

Next up: the 100 Round 1 winners compete for up to $1 million in Round 2.  Same rules apply--Facebook voting, etc, but none of our votes carry over.

We'll have more posts about Round 2, our strategy, and what we would do with the $1 million grant in the coming days.  Until then, though, please accept our most heartfelt thanks on behalf of The Generation Project and the students that we serve.

Chase Voting Closed. Thank You, and Stay Tuned.

Sunday, 13 December 2009 14:11 by Eli Savit

Thanks so much to all of our amazing supporters who voted for us in the first round of the Chase Community Giving challenge.  The top 100 organizations--who will win $25,000 and compete for a shot at $1 million--will be announced on Wednesday, December 16.

Regardless of the outcome, we were absolutely blown away by your support throughout this competition.  We don't know precisely how many votes we received, but we do know that it was on the order of thousands.  Moreover, we tracked the contest closely and we can say with certainty that we were in contention for the top 100.

Over 500,000 charities competed in this competition.  As a newer organization, we were definitely an upstart, so it was inspiring to see so many of you rally behind our cause and our vision for the future of educational philanthropy.   The widespread, nationwide support we've attracted so far confirms that people are passionate about making real educational change, and are excited about the opportunity to personally make an impact on the lives of low-income students.

Your support is particularly important to us, because our vision and our model depend on support from individuals like all of you.  You are the ones who have to care enough to donate your money.  You are the ones who will use your passions to design gifts.  At The Generation Project, we're not the philanthropists.  You are.

Ultimately, this is your organization.  Thank you so much for supporting it.

Use the Facebooks to Help Us Win $1 Million!

Wednesday, 18 November 2009 18:54 by Eli Savit

Do you have an account on that Book-Face thing?  Well, stop playing "Mafia Wars" for two seconds and help us help kids.

From now through January, Chase is sponsoring a voting contest in which they will give up to $5 million to community-based non-profits.  The non-profits that finish in the top 100 in total votes by December 11th will receive $25,000, and will be entered in a second round of voting for $1 million.    All you have to do is login to Facebook, go to http://apps.facebook.com/chasecommunitygiving/, search "generation project inc" and click through to vote for us!

Oh, so you're a visual learner?  Check out our easy steps below.

Step One: Search for "Generation Project" or "Generation Project Inc" in the following little box:
No, don't put "The Generation Project."  They removed the "The" from our name, torpedoing over a year's worth of branding.  Also, if the box doesn't autofill right away, try again.  What can we say?  Book Face is fickle.

Step Two: Click "Allow":
We promise they won't send you any "Lil' Green Patch" requests.

Step Three: Click "Vote for Charity":
Yeah, we're incorporated in Illinois.  That makes us winners, like Obama.

Step Four: Become a Fan of Chase Community Giving:
This is just like an American election: you have to be a "fan" of the United States before you vote in an election.  Like a patriotism test.  What's that Professor Doug Laycock?  That's unconstitutional?  Well, Book Face doesn't HAVE a Constitution, so you have to do it anyway.

Step Five (IMPORTANT): Publish to your profile!
This is actually important because it spreads the word and makes it easier for people to vote for us.  Please do it!

and, that's it!  You've done your good deed for the day.  And if you've followed us for any length of time at all, you know that these contests have played an integral role in our success thus far.
