2010 Reflections: Our Donors

Megan O'Rourke, Development Intern at The University of Michigan

Here we are on the last day of 2010, ready to write up our new year's resolutions and plan out how to make the most of 2011. Somewhere on everyone's list of what they hope to achieve in the new year is to give back to those less fortunate. Having the intention to donate or volunteer is certainly a step in the right direction, but following through with this particular goal often seems to get lost in the shuffle of work, family, and financial responsibilities.

At The Generation Project, we bridge the gap between wanting to give and actively taking a role in your donation. Anyone who has the desire to give back, to make their mark, or to find a way to share their passions can do so through this innovative non profit organization. When I say anyone, I do mean anyone! We find individuals, groups, and companies, some who are the position to be fantastically generous and some who able to give smaller amounts but with just as much heart.

When The Generation Project is fortunate enough to come into contact with people who are willing to donate, we find a way to make their efforts as personal and meaningful as possible. Donors create gifts that are specific to their interests and to the impact they hope to have on education nationwide. It's easy to get people excited about The Generation Project once they understand just how much involvement they will have in their gift. After designing a gift for an individual student, a classroom, or an entire school, each donor can track the progress of that gift to see when a teacher selects it and how the student(s) benefit from their personal generosity.

There is no better feeling than knowing that you were able to make a difference in someone's life. The Generation Project connects people who want to give with those who are the most deserving. Every gift provides an opportunity for an underserved student. Every gift makes a significant difference. Every donor has the chance to do something remarkable.

2010 Reflections: We're Not Waiting Alone

Friday, 24 December 2010 09:19 by Interns

Dan Camacho, The University of Michigan

The Generation Project’s relationship with Detroit Young Professionals, a regional nonprofit focused on professional development and civic engagement, began this summer with a soiree at Bora Bora UltraLounge in Dearborn, MI. This get-together was a great way to meet others in the metro Detroit area also at an early point in their careers who share a passion for the well-being of Detroit and public education.

Our November 11 screening of Waiting for Superman and subsequent Mix&Mingle, arranged incollaboration with DYP at the Main Art Theater in Royal Oak, was a wonderful opportunity to get together with other like-minded, concerned individuals and learn about the problems facing our schools nationwide. It was particularly special to share the movie-viewing experience with that audience for the warm camaraderie that developed and the quality of conversation that ensued throughout the evening.

As I was sitting through the documentary I couldn’t help but think about the grandeur of the film’s impact in comparison with the mechanism of my work with The Generation Project, which involves spreading the word about our organization’s mission on mostly a one-on-one basis. At this time of the year, when reflection is in order, it pleases me to observe that all of us – from Superman’s producers to our friends at DYP to my intern teammates at The Generation Project  – compose a larger movement to ameliorate the dilemma of educational inequality in this country. Not only am I confident, looking out on the coming year and the future ahead, that our pointed conviction and perseverance will allow us to prevail, but I am reassured that with all this momentum we are not simply waiting, and we are certainly not waiting alone.

2010 Reflections: The University of Michigan Greek Week

Tuesday, 21 December 2010 09:03 by Interns

Kat Marsh, The University of Michigan

Bright lights. Hands shaking. Nervous laughter in Hill Auditorium as interns Chrissy, Brendan and I take the stage to speak about the Generation Project at one of the University of Michigan's most publicized events - Greek Week. It was our job to describe The Generation Project's mission, vision and goals in accordance with the values and commitment of the Greek community to over 4,000 students during the philanthropic symposium.

During Greek Week, the sororities and fraternities of Michigan participate in a variety of leadership, service and community events to raise funds to donate to different charities, and in 2010 The Generation Project was lucky enough to be selected as one of the honored charities. The Greek community was able to raise over $9,000 for The Generation Project! The Generation Project and the Greek Week leadership team were able to work together to craft a gift that is very applicable to many students at Michigan- implementing a high school sports program. This gift, named "Teamwork! Sponsorship of a Detroit High School Sports Team", has since been claimed and the funds are currently sponsoring a men's and women's high school basketball teams at W.E.B. DuBois in Detroit, MI. (The school's website can be found at http://aishashule-duboisprep.com/index.html).

Working with Greek Week was a true honor, and I believe this donation allowed many students to feel personally committed and positively effected to such an outstanding donation. Many students have since asked me how they can become involved and ideas for possible gifts, even on limited funds. It's great to see The Generation Project mission spreading through campus. The Generation Project is truly thankful for the great work of the Greek community at Michigan, and looks forward to a continuing partnership!

2010 Reflections: Daphne Willis Partnership

Monday, 20 December 2010 19:04 by Interns

By Andrea Marcos
Director, Community and Campus Partnerships
Intern at Northwestern University

Our partnership with Daphne started from a simple email. An email that got to the right person.

Before turning into the self-assured, marvelously expressive artist that she is today, Daphne Willis was studying Secondary Education and English at DePaul University. The Generation Project proved to be the ideal medium to continue pursuing her passion in education while being a full time musician. Daphne is such an enthusiastic individual who is eager to share her story as a musician and a student. After a successful benefit concert and generous donation from Daphne, The Generation Project and Daphne developed a music workshop called "A Day With Daphne" that encompasses the mission and interests of both parties. This event consists of a music workshop taught by Daphne Willisthat is open to undergraduate students who are eager to start their careers in music. The workshop is followed by a concert where Daphne donates 10% of the proceeds for student groups to put towards a gift for The Generation Project. Student groups on campus are encouraged to compete to see who can rally themost student attendance. The student group who brings the most students to the concert gets to design a gift to The Generation Project!

Daphne has given generously to The Generation Project in the past and will continue to do so in the coming year. The partnership will launch in early 2011 and is set to be piloted on various college campuses across the United States. We are incredibly thankful for her support and look forward to empowering students to make a difference with Daphne.
